Have you ever stopped and thought about WHY you’re eating?
Not necessarily what you’re eating or how much you’re eating but WHY?
⠀
Is it because you were craving something sweet or salty or crunchy or creamy or hot or cold?
⠀
Is it because you turned on the TV or computer or started mindlessly scrolling through Instagram or Facebook and grabbed a snack nearby without really wanting one?
⠀
Is it because it’s 8:30pm and you always have a snack at that time?
⠀
Is it because you’re bored or Happy or Angry or Lonely or Tired (HALT)?
⠀
Taking a minute to HALT and ask yourself why you’re eating before you put food in your mouth is a helpful way to bring self-awareness to your eating tendencies.
⠀
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF IT’S PHYSICAL HUNGER?⠀
- Physical hunger builds over time; it doesn’t happen “all of a sudden”.
- Physical hunger means you’ll eat anything to fill the void and not that you “need” to eat something specific.
- You have some signs of hunger (pangs, stomach growling, headache, shakiness).
- It’s been several hours since your last meal.
Which type of hunger occurs most often to you?
